Spicy but not Tempeh from Veganomicon

Oh wow, if you haven't made this one already, what are you waiting for?!?!
We don't have access to fresh tempeh where we live and the Cap'n is adverse to putting anything remotely resembling packaged tempeh near his mouth so I opted to make this mouth-watering dish with these, trusty Soy Curls! (kinda gross, how like chicken they look, no?) Good thing they taste amazing (and have a great texture) when cooked in a great sauce and this is a fantastic one indeed!

I followed the directions exactly, but did to rehydrated Soy Curls what was called for for tempeh. Oh, and I did back of the red pepper flakes, only adding a teaspoon rather than one and a half because the Cap'n always calls me out for making things too spicy....and...I did sprinkle the top liberally with Nutritional Yeast as I do all pasta dishes, but I didn't mix it in as I like to have it full flavor in a bite here and there but not necessarily flavor the dish throughout. We devoured this and I'm already salivating thinking of my lunch today....leftovers! YUM!

This one is truly a winner and I cannot wait to make it for fellow vegans and omni's alike. The flavor is unmatched, and it's really easy to make. Food aversions be damned, this one will certainly be made again and again!

Hey ! I didn't know you were pregnant ! Very heartfelt Congratulations to both of you. You are going to be a very beautiful mom <3

It looks amazing !
I am really torn. Should I buy Veganomicon or Eat, Drink and be Merry, first ?
What do you think ?

The cassoulet is also looking darn good !

Yum! I have some soy curls in my pantry and I'm not sure what to do with them (haven't ever used them before). This sounds like a perfect trial run!

Congratulations! How exciting... I just loved being pregnant, but remember the beginning and the sickness.. oy.. not easy to deal with.
Everything looks GREAT!.. I have never tried soy curls... they seem too meaty for me.. but I'll try them some day.

I'm glad that your food aversions aren't keeping you from this dish - this was the first dish that I marked, when I received Veganomicon in the mail - I need to make it!!

That looks really good too. I think I might try that with the Soy Curls instead of tempeh; good idea! (And yeah, we'll definitely be putting in all the red pepper, I'm married to a guy from Texas!)

I seriously feel like my copy of Veganomicon is NEVER going to get here! I'm reminding myself that patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait...

I think I'm going to finally place an order for soy curls. I'm just going to bite the bullet and order the whole case or whatever the largest package is to avoid multiple shipping charges. I have been dreaming up this buffalo sauce wrap with vegan ranch dressing and I think the soy curls would work perfectly in it.

Ooh. Yummy. I love the soy curls. Did you use the spicy sauce to rehydrate or put them in the sauce already rehydrated? I'm eager to try this!

I've never heard of Soy Curls. I'll have to check them out. It is kinda gross how much they look like chicken.

gaia- yup, and thank you! we're sooo excited, have i mentioned that? ;)
oh, no ya don't! i can't choose! they're both so amazing for totally different reasons. i think that ED&BV focuses more on wheat free and healthier foods that are amazingly good, but Veganomicon is just chock full of comfort food heaven. lots of it is also healthier but oh...see? i can't do it! hehe

vegan noodle- once you do, you won't believe you haven't been using them all along! they're so very versatile and yummy!

melody- see above ;)

vegyogini- it is...and they do...but i so understand your impatience. i've been waiting since May for the Millenium Cookbook to make it to my door. it came today, and i couldn't be happier.

vivacious- ooooh, that sounds sooo good!

aimee- i rehydrated them in warm water then squeezed out the excess. it really is not a ton of sauce in the recipe. honestly? i thought it wasn't enough but turns out perfect making it not overly saucy. we loved it.

You know what I just did an hour ago ? I just went and ordered 80$ worth of vegan cookbooks. Vegonomicon, Eat, Drink and Be Vegan, Vegan Baking and two by Bryanna. Problem solved :p
It's that White Bean and Leek Cassoulet that brought me over the edge.

But thanks for trying... I really had you working hard there LOL

I'm going to have to try those soy curls. Looks like a nice change up from tofu and other soy stuff.

I spreading the word to vegans with blogs about an on-line auction for Companion Animal Protection Society, the link is www.caps.cmarket.com and they are auctioning off Vegan with a Vengeance, Veganomicon, and a gift certificate to Vegan Essentials. It looks like they are not raising much money so I felt really bad and thought I would try to spread the word.
